Denim, handmade in Italy

Closed was founded in 1978 to produce high-quality jeans in Italy - and that is exactly what they are still known for today. Our long-standing Italian production partners are the best in the denim industry and have been making our jeans for decades.

Denim is more than just a fabric to us – it’s where everything begins. After all, no denim, no jeans.

At Closed, though, denim doesn’t take us to France or the US. For us, denim means Italy. Always has. Our jeans have always been made in Italy. And for many of them, the denim is woven in Italy too – at Candiani, one of the most renowned mills in the world.

Every step of the production process happens locally: our jeans are sewn by hand by two family-run companies we've worked with since the very beginning of Closed. Paul makes our women’s styles with years of expertise and meticulous care.

Incom is responsible for our men’s jeans – with just as much skill and passion. As for the washes: they’re developed in collaboration with three of the most innovative laundries in Italy – Everest, Green Lab and Wash Italia. Italian-made jeans – from denim to wash. Through and through.

What makes denim so special compared to other fabrics?

Woven in a specific way from cotton and tradi- tionally dyed with indigo, denim stands out for its durability and unmistakable look – one that only gets better with time. With every wear and wash, it develops more character, becoming a true original.

What is the origin of the word “denim,” and how did it become associated with jeans?

The word denim comes from the French phrase de Nîmes, meaning “from Nîmes” – a city where cotton fabric was used for workwear centuries ago. Later, a certain Mr Levi Strauss turned it into the very first pair of jeans, in San Francisco.
